Fish On

18x24
oil on canvas

A recent commission for one of my friends (and fishing buddy) just in time for Christmas. A low angle perspective of his "Clacka" driftboat with an angler tied into a bruiser trout. I enjoyed the challenge of balancing the level of detail in the foreground and background with the boat and fishermen...and loving the subject matter never hurts either.

A classic still life of some potted geraniums...a housewarming gift to my mother-in-law.

Brookie II

18x36
oil on canvas

Another summer commission and another fun painting. Brook trout are like little glimmering jewels that you hold onto for a few moments and then let them slip back in the water...I tried to capture that idea in this painting but still keep it bold and bright and not too overworked.

A cropped close-up of one of Peter Romaine's motorcycles. Cool bike and a fun commission to do...took me back to CCS vis-com classes.

I enjoyed the orange tractor painting so much I decided to do another one. Same era...different story. A young farmer proudly preparing his new machine.

Two farmers stumped by a busted old tractor. Sometimes telling a story or imagining a scenario kind of helps you "settle in" to a painting. Its fun to imagine what they might be saying or what they should be wearing or what their body language might be revealing. I enjoyed doing this painting for other simple reasons too...I like the colors and old tractors are cool.

Summer days like this make Michigan bearable. A look down the South pier out onto Lake Michigan. The sister painting to this (the North Pier) is on deck.

A bright red barn under a winter sky. There are still a lot of barns scattered around Michigan...unfortunately there is also a lot of snow.
